The pearl oyster was very important to the economy of the Gulf before the discovery of oil. Life at sea was hard and the pearl divers needed great resilience to overcome the challenges that they faced. Astronauts also face many challenges and always need to work together as a team.
Take a closer look at the different aspects of life on board a pearl diving boat, use what you know about the life cycle of a pearl oyster, and find the parallels between life at sea and life in space.
You have seen that the space environment requires food to be packaged and eaten in a different way to here on Earth. Since food deliveries are rare, and water is very precious, a lot of planning and care is required to make sure that the astronauts have the right nutrition to support their bodies.
